Unraveling Family History Mysteries on FamilySearch
This guide will help you use FamilySearch.org to solve mysteries in your family history.
Step 1: Start with What You Know
Begin by logging into your FamilySearch account. Then navigate to the Family Tree section.
- Go to FamilySearch.org.
- Click Sign In in the upper right corner.
- Enter your username and password.
- Click Family Tree, then Tree.
Step 2: Review Existing Profiles
Carefully examine the profiles of your ancestors for any clues or inconsistencies.
- Click on a person in your tree.
- Click Person in the information box that appears.
- Review the Overview, Details, Timeline, Memories, and Sources tabs.
Step 3: Search Records
Use the FamilySearch records search to find documents that confirm or add to the information you have.
- From the person page, click Search Records.
- FamilySearch will automatically search for records related to that person.
- Review the search results for potential matches.
Step 4: Evaluate Sources
When you find a record, carefully evaluate its reliability.
- Check the original document image, if available.
- Look for details that confirm the record relates to your ancestor (names, dates, locations).
- Consider the source of the record (census, birth certificate, etc.) and its potential for accuracy.
Step 5: Add Sources to Profiles
Attach the sources to the profiles of the people in your tree.
- From the record details page, click Attach to Family Tree.
- Choose the correct person in your tree.
- Add a reason why this source is relevant.
- Click Attach.
Step 6: Use the Research Wiki
Consult the FamilySearch Research Wiki for information about specific locations or record types.
- From the FamilySearch homepage, click Search, then Wiki.
- Enter a location or topic in the search box.
- Browse the articles for research tips and resources.
Step 7: Collaborate with Others
Connect with other researchers who may have information about your family.
- Look for the Collaborate tab on a person's page to see if there are any notes or discussions.
- You can also use the FamilySearch Community to ask questions and share information.
