Transferring Data from Legacy to FamilySearch
This guide will help you transfer your genealogy information from Legacy software to FamilySearch.
Exporting a GEDCOM File from Legacy
First, you need to export a GEDCOM file from Legacy.
- Open your family file in Legacy.
- Go to File in the top menu.
- Select Export To, then choose GEDCOM File.
- In the GEDCOM Export window, make sure to select the appropriate options. A common choice is to include notes and sources.
- Click Export to create the GEDCOM file. Choose a location on your computer where you can easily find the file.
Uploading the GEDCOM to FamilySearch
Next, upload the GEDCOM file to FamilySearch.
- Go to the GEDCOM page on FamilySearch.
- Sign in to your FamilySearch account.
- Click Choose File to select the GEDCOM file from your computer.
- Click Upload.
- After the upload is complete, FamilySearch will process the file. This may take some time, depending on the size of the file.
Reviewing Your Uploaded GEDCOM File
After uploading, review the information to ensure accuracy.
- On the GEDCOM page, find your uploaded file.
- Click on the name of the GEDCOM file to view its details.
- Review the list of individuals in the GEDCOM file.
- Go to the Family Tree to see how the information appears in your tree.
Merging and Correcting Information
Compare the information in your GEDCOM file with the existing information on FamilySearch.
- Check for potential duplicates. FamilySearch may identify possible matches.
- Merge any duplicate individuals carefully to avoid losing information.
- Correct any inaccuracies or missing information.
