How to Find Marriage Records on FamilySearch
Finding Marriage Records
Marriage records connect families and often reveal maiden names, parents, and witnesses.
Step 1: Search Records
Go to Search > Records. Enter the name of either spouse.
Step 2: Add Spouse Information
Click "Add Spouse" and enter what you know about the other person.
Step 3: Filter Results
Select "Marriage" under Event Type on the left sidebar.
What Marriage Records Contain
- Full names of bride and groom
- Bride's maiden name
- Ages or birth dates
- Parents' names (often!)
- Witnesses (often relatives)
- Residence at time of marriage
Types of Marriage Records
- Marriage license - Permission to marry
- Marriage certificate - Proof the marriage occurred
- Church records - May include banns (announcements)
- Newspaper announcements
