Finding Marriage Records

Marriage records connect families and often reveal maiden names, parents, and witnesses.

Step 1: Search Records

Go to Search > Records. Enter the name of either spouse.

Step 2: Add Spouse Information

Click "Add Spouse" and enter what you know about the other person.

Step 3: Filter Results

Select "Marriage" under Event Type on the left sidebar.

What Marriage Records Contain

  • Full names of bride and groom
  • Bride's maiden name
  • Ages or birth dates
  • Parents' names (often!)
  • Witnesses (often relatives)
  • Residence at time of marriage

Types of Marriage Records

  • Marriage license - Permission to marry
  • Marriage certificate - Proof the marriage occurred
  • Church records - May include banns (announcements)
  • Newspaper announcements
