How to Find Death Records and Obituaries

Finding Death Records

Death records often contain valuable information about a person's life, including parents' names and birthplace.

Step 1: Search Records

Go to Search > Records and enter the person's name.

Step 2: Filter by Event Type

On the left sidebar, select "Death" under Event Type.

What Death Records Contain

  • Full name and date of death
  • Age at death (helps calculate birth year)
  • Place of death and burial
  • Parents' names (sometimes)
  • Spouse's name
  • Occupation

Finding Obituaries

FamilySearch has many newspaper collections. Search for the person's name and filter by "Newspapers".

Cemetery Records

  • Search FamilySearch for cemetery records
  • Try FindAGrave.com for headstone photos
  • Check BillionGraves.com
