How to Find Death Records and Obituaries
Finding Death Records
Death records often contain valuable information about a person's life, including parents' names and birthplace.
Step 1: Search Records
Go to Search > Records and enter the person's name.
Step 2: Filter by Event Type
On the left sidebar, select "Death" under Event Type.
What Death Records Contain
- Full name and date of death
- Age at death (helps calculate birth year)
- Place of death and burial
- Parents' names (sometimes)
- Spouse's name
- Occupation
Finding Obituaries
FamilySearch has many newspaper collections. Search for the person's name and filter by "Newspapers".
Cemetery Records
- Search FamilySearch for cemetery records
- Try FindAGrave.com for headstone photos
- Check BillionGraves.com
