How to Merge Duplicate People in Your Family Tree
Merging Duplicates on FamilySearch
Duplicate records can clutter your family tree. Here's how to merge them properly:
Step 1: Find the Duplicate
Open one of the person's pages in your tree. Scroll down and look on the right side for "Possible Duplicates".
Step 2: Review the Match
Click "Review Merge" to see both records side by side. Compare:
- Names and name variations
- Birth dates and places
- Death dates and places
- Parents and spouses
Step 3: Choose What to Keep
For each piece of information, choose the most accurate version. FamilySearch will show you options from both records.
Step 4: Complete the Merge
Click the "Merge" button when you're ready. The records will be combined into one.
Important Notes
- Merging cannot be undone easily - be sure before you merge
- Only merge if you're confident they're the same person
- This feature is only available on the website, not the mobile app
