- Option A: Use the "Find a Collection" Search Bar:
- On the right side of the page, locate the search bar labeled "Find a Collection".
- Type specific keywords such as "Canada Immigration", "Canada Passenger Lists", or "Canada Border Crossings" into the search bar.
- Press Enter or click the search icon.
- Option B: Browse by Place and Filter by Life Event:
- Scroll down on the "Find Historical Records" page to the interactive map or the list of "Browse by Place" links.

Step 3: Browse and Select Relevant Collections
After performing either Option A or B from Step 2, you will see a list of available historical record collections related to Canada immigration.
- Carefully review the titles and descriptions of the collections. Look for collections that align with your ancestor's approximate arrival date and potential port of entry.
- Common collection titles include "Canada, Passenger Lists, 1865-1935", "Canada, Immigrant Records, 1900-1951", or "Canada, Border Crossings from US, 1908-1935".
- Click on the title of a promising collection to open its dedicated search page.
Step 4: Search Within the Chosen Collection
Once you are on a specific collection's page, you will find a dedicated search interface.
- Enter as much information as you know about your ancestor, such as their First Name, Last Name, approximate Birth Date, Birthplace, and relevant Immigration Date or Port of Arrival.
- Tip: If your initial search yields no results, try variations of names (e.g., "John" vs. "Johannes"), broaden date ranges, or leave some fields blank to perform a wider search.
- Click the "Search" button to view potential records.
Step 5: Review Search Results and Access Records
The search results will typically display a list of records matching your criteria.
- Examine each result carefully, paying attention to names, dates, and places.
- To view the full record details or the digitized image, click on the ancestor's name in the search results list or the camera icon (if available).
- Always look at the original document image whenever possible, as transcriptions may contain errors or omit crucial details.
- Download or save relevant records to your FamilySearch Family Tree or personal files for future reference.
