How to Find 1950 Census Records by Address on FamilySearch
This guide helps you find 1950 U.S. Census records by address on FamilySearch.org by browsing images.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Find 1950 Census Records by Address on FamilySearch
1. Access FamilySearch and Sign In
- Open your web browser and go to FamilySearch.org.
- Click the "Sign In" button located in the top right corner of the page.
- Enter your username and password, then click "Sign In".
2. Navigate to the Records Search Page
- Once signed in, hover your mouse over "Search" in the top menu bar.
- From the dropdown menu, click on "Records". This will take you to the main historical records search page.
3. Locate the 1950 United States Census Collection
- On the Records Search page, find the section titled "Find a Collection" on the right side.
- In the text box labeled "Collection title or ID", type "United States Census, 1950" and click the collection name when it appears. This will take you to the specific collection page.
4. Begin Browsing the Census Images
- On the 1950 United States Census collection page, you will see a link or button that says something like "Browse through [number] images" (the number will vary). Click this link to start browsing the census images.
5. Select the Geographic Location
To narrow your search for a specific address, you'll need to select its location:
- First, select the "State" from the dropdown list where the address is located.
- Next, select the "County" from the new dropdown list that appears.
- If applicable, you may then be prompted to select a "City or Town". Choose the correct city or town for your address.
6. Identify and Select the Enumeration District (ED)
To efficiently locate a specific address, you will ideally need to know its Enumeration District (ED). The 1950 Census is organized by these small geographic areas. FamilySearch.org does not offer a direct tool to find an ED by street address. If you do not know the ED number, you would need to systematically browse through each Enumeration District listed for your chosen city/town or county, examining the images for street names.
- If you know the ED number, select the corresponding district from the list provided.
7. Browse the Census Images for Your Address
- Once you have selected the Enumeration District, you will be taken to the first image of that ED.
- Use the navigation arrows or the image number box at the top to move through the census pages.
- Carefully examine the census images. Look for the street names and house numbers listed by the enumerator on the left side of the schedule (often in columns labeled "Street," "House Number," or similar notations).
- Zoom in if necessary using the zoom tools provided by the image viewer to read the handwriting clearly.
- Continue browsing page by page until you locate the specific address you are searching for. Once found, you can view all individuals enumerated at that location.
