Getting Started: Your Essential Guide to FamilySearch.org

This guide will walk you through the essential first steps to begin your family history journey on FamilySearch.org.

Step 1: Create Your Free FamilySearch Account

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to FamilySearch.org.
  2. Look for the "Free Account" or "Create Account" button, usually located in the top right corner of the page. Click it.
  3. Fill in the required information: your first name, last name, birth date, country of residence, and select your gender.
  4. Create a unique "Username" and a strong "Password". Make sure to remember these!
  5. Read and agree to the "Terms of Use" and "Privacy Policy" by checking the box.
  6. Click the "Create Account" button.
  7. Check your email inbox for a confirmation email from FamilySearch. Click the link inside the email to verify and activate your new account.

Step 2: Sign In to FamilySearch

  1. Return to FamilySearch.org.
  2. Click the "Sign In" button in the top right corner.
  3. Enter your newly created "Username" and "Password" into the respective fields.
  4. Click "Sign In". You should now be logged into your FamilySearch account.

Step 3: Begin Building Your Family Tree

  1. Once logged in, you'll land on your personal FamilySearch homepage. To start your tree, locate and click on "Tree" in the main navigation menu at the top of the page. This is usually the second option from the left.
  2. You will typically see a prompt to add yourself or directly see an empty tree with "Me" at the center. If prompted, click "Add Yourself".
  3. Next, you'll want to add your parents. Look for the "+ Add Father" and "+ Add Mother" boxes connected to your profile. Click on one of these.
  4. A pop-up window will appear. Carefully enter the known information for that parent: their first name, last name, gender, birth date, birth place, and if they are living or deceased. If deceased, you can also add a death date and place.
  5. Click "Next" or "Create Person". FamilySearch might suggest existing records if it finds a match. Review these carefully. If you're unsure, select "Create New Person".
  6. Repeat this process for your other parent.
  7. As you add individuals, your tree will begin to grow. You can click on any person in your tree to view their details page, add more information, or add their parents.

Step 4: Explore Your Tree View Options

FamilySearch offers different ways to visualize your family tree. While in the "Tree" view, look for buttons or dropdowns, usually on the left or top of the tree display, that allow you to switch between:

  • Landscape View: Shows generations horizontally, with you on the left.
  • Portrait View: Displays generations vertically, with you at the bottom.
  • Fan Chart: A beautiful radial view showing your ancestors spreading out like a fan.

Experiment with these views to find what works best for you as you expand your family history research.
