Getting Started with Genealogy on FamilySearch

This guide will help you take your first steps in exploring your family history using FamilySearch.org.

Step 1: Creating a Free Account

Before you can start adding information to your family tree, you'll need to create a free FamilySearch account.

  1. Go to FamilySearch.org.
  2. Click the "Free Account" button in the top right corner.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions, providing your first and last name, birthdate, gender, and country.
  4. Enter a username, password, and email address.
  5. Read and accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
  6. Click "Create Account".
  7. Verify your email address by clicking the link sent to your inbox.

Step 2: Starting Your Family Tree

Once your account is set up, you can begin building your family tree.

  1. Log in to your FamilySearch account at FamilySearch.org.
  2. Click on the "Family Tree" tab at the top of the page.
  3. Select "Tree" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Enter information about yourself. This includes your first and last name, gender, birthdate, and place of birth.
  5. Click "Add Father" and enter the same information for your father.
  6. Click "Add Mother" and enter the information for your mother.
  7. Continue adding ancestors, filling in as much information as you know. Remember to add spouses and children.

Step 3: Searching for Records

FamilySearch has billions of historical records that can help you find more information about your ancestors.

  1. Click on the "Search" tab at the top of the page.
  2. Select "Records" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter the information you know about an ancestor, such as their name, birthdate, and place of residence. The more information you provide, the more accurate your search results will be.
  4. Click the "Search" button.
  5. Review the search results carefully. Look for records that match the information you have.
  6. If you find a record that seems promising, click on it to view more details.
  7. If the record matches your ancestor, you can attach it to their profile in your family tree.

Step 4: Exploring the FamilySearch Wiki

The FamilySearch Wiki is a collaborative online encyclopedia that provides information about genealogy research resources and strategies.

  1. Click on the "Search" tab at the top of the page.
  2. Select "Wiki" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter the name of a location or a topic related to genealogy in the search box.
  4. Browse the articles to find helpful tips and resources for your research.
