Finding Ohio Marriage Records on FamilySearch

This guide will help you navigate FamilySearch.org to locate Ohio marriage records for your ancestors.

Step 1: Navigate to the FamilySearch Records Search

  • Open your web browser and go to FamilySearch.org.
  • If prompted, sign in to your free FamilySearch account. If you don't have one, you can create one easily.
  • From the top navigation menu, click on "Search".
  • In the dropdown menu that appears, click on "Records". This will take you to the main historical records search page.

Step 2: Search for Ohio Marriage Collections

  • On the Records Search page, locate the section titled "Find a Collection". This is typically a search bar positioned on the right side of the page.
  • In this search bar, type "Ohio marriage" and press Enter or click the search icon.
  • FamilySearch will display a list of historical record collections specifically related to Ohio marriages. Common and highly useful collections include:
    • "Ohio, County Marriage Records, 1774-1993" (often containing digitized images, some indexed)
    • "Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958" (frequently more extensively indexed for direct name searches)
  • Review the collection titles and their descriptions carefully to select the most appropriate one for your ancestor's marriage time frame and location. Click on the desired collection to open it.

Step 3: Search Within the Specific Collection

  • Once you've opened a particular Ohio marriage collection, you will see a search form designed for that collection.
  • Enter the ancestor's name you are researching. You can use the "First Names" and "Last Names" fields for either the groom or the bride, or both if you know them.
  • Utilize the "Place" field to enter the specific county or city in Ohio where the marriage likely took place.
  • Make use of the "Year Range" fields to narrow down the possible marriage date. Entering a range (e.g., 1850-1860) is often more effective than a precise year.
  • Click the "Search" button to submit your query and view the results.

Step 4: Review Search Results and Browse Images

  • If your search generates results, review the list carefully. Click on an individual record entry to see a summary of the indexed information and, if available, view the original record image.
  • Important Tip for Image-Only Collections: For some collections, or specific years within a collection (e.g., parts of "Ohio, County Marriage Records, 1774-1993"), the records may not be fully indexed by name. In these cases, you will need to use the "Browse through [Number] images" link.
    • Click this link, often found on the right side of the collection's page.
    • You will then be prompted to select the correct "County".
    • Next, choose the appropriate "Record Type and Years" (e.g., "Marriage Records 1850-1860").
    • You can then scroll page by page through the digitized marriage records, much like flipping through a physical book, to locate your ancestor's entry.
  • If your initial search is unsuccessful, remember to try variations of names, broaden your date ranges, or even search without a spouse's name to increase your chances of finding the record.
