Finding Hawaii Vital Records on FamilySearch.org

This guide will walk you through the process of locating Hawaii vital records on FamilySearch.org, helping you uncover your ancestors' birth, marriage, and death details.

Step 1: Access FamilySearch.org and Log In

  • Open your web browser and go to FamilySearch.org.
  • Click on the "Sign In" button in the top right corner of the page.
  • Enter your username and password, then click "Sign In". If you do not have an account, you can create one for free by clicking "Free Account".

Step 2: Navigate to the Records Search Page

  • Once you are logged in, hover your mouse over the "Search" tab located in the main navigation menu at the top of the FamilySearch website.
  • From the dropdown menu that appears, click on "Records". This action will direct you to the main search page for historical records.

Step 3: Find Hawaii Collections

  • On the Records Search page, locate the section titled "Find a Collection". This is typically found on the right side of the screen, beneath the search map.
  • In the search bar provided within the "Find a Collection" section, type "Hawaii" and then press the Enter key on your keyboard or click the magnifying glass icon.
  • FamilySearch will then display a list of all record collections that are related to Hawaii.

Step 4: Explore Relevant Hawaii Vital Records Collections

  • Carefully review the list of collections presented. Look specifically for titles that mention vital records, as these are most likely to contain birth, marriage, and death information. Common and useful collections include:
    • "Hawaii, Births and Baptisms"
    • "Hawaii, Marriages"
    • "Hawaii, Deaths"
    • You may also find other relevant collections, such as "Hawaii, Honolulu Passenger Lists", which can sometimes include birthdate information, or collections specific to particular counties or islands within Hawaii.
  • Click on the title of a collection that appears most relevant to your research to open it.

Step 5: Search or Browse Within a Collection

  • Once you are inside a specific collection, you will generally have two primary methods for finding records:
    • Search: Utilize the search fields (e.g., First Name, Last Name, Birth Year, Place) provided at the top of the collection page. Enter as much information as you know about your ancestor.
    • Browse through Images: If the collection is "image only" or only partially indexed, you will see a link such as "Browse through [number] images". Click this link to manually navigate through digitized records, which are often organized by year, volume, or alphabetically. This method is essential for finding records that have not yet been fully indexed.
  • If your initial search yields no results, try variations of names, broaden your date range, or consider searching for family members to locate the record indirectly.

Step 6: Review and Save Your Findings

  • When you locate a record that appears to match your ancestor, carefully examine all the details presented on the record image or its transcription.
  • Look for crucial clues such as names of parents, spouses, exact birthplaces, and specific dates.
  • If the record confidently belongs to your ancestor, click the "Attach to Family Tree" button (if available) to link it directly to your ancestor's profile in the FamilySearch Family Tree. You can also manually add the information to their profile.
  • Consider saving the image or printing a copy for your personal genealogy records.
