How to Find Military Records on FamilySearch
Finding Military Records
Military records can reveal details about your ancestor's life, physical description, and family.
Step 1: Search Records
Go to Search > Records and enter your ancestor's name.
Step 2: Filter by Category
On the left sidebar, select "Military" under Categories.
Types of Military Records
- Draft registration cards - WWI and WWII drafts
- Service records - Enlistment, discharge papers
- Pension files - Often include family information
- Compiled service records - Civil War and earlier
What You Might Find
- Physical description (height, eye color, hair)
- Birth date and birthplace
- Next of kin (spouse, parents)
- Occupation before service
- Dates and places of service
WWI Draft Cards
Nearly all men born 1872-1900 registered. Search "United States World War I Draft Registration Cards".
