How to Find Military Records on FamilySearch

Finding Military Records

Military records can reveal details about your ancestor's life, physical description, and family.

Step 1: Search Records

Go to Search > Records and enter your ancestor's name.

Step 2: Filter by Category

On the left sidebar, select "Military" under Categories.

Types of Military Records

  • Draft registration cards - WWI and WWII drafts
  • Service records - Enlistment, discharge papers
  • Pension files - Often include family information
  • Compiled service records - Civil War and earlier

What You Might Find

  • Physical description (height, eye color, hair)
  • Birth date and birthplace
  • Next of kin (spouse, parents)
  • Occupation before service
  • Dates and places of service

WWI Draft Cards

Nearly all men born 1872-1900 registered. Search "United States World War I Draft Registration Cards".
