How to Find Marriage Records on FamilySearch

This guide will help you find marriage records on FamilySearch.org.

Steps to Find Marriage Records:

  1. Go to FamilySearch.org: Open your web browser and go to the FamilySearch website.
  2. Sign In: In the top right corner, click "Sign In." Enter your username and password, then click the "Sign In" button.
  3. Navigate to Records: From the homepage, click "Search" in the menu bar, then select "Records" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Enter Search Criteria: On the "Find a Record" page, enter the information you know about the couple. At a minimum, enter the first and last names of either the bride or groom. Include a location and a year or range of years. The more information you provide, the more accurate your search results will be.
  5. Search by Collection: Below the general search fields, you can search by collection. Scroll down and click "Search by Collection." In the "Filter by Collection" box, type "marriage" to narrow the list. Select a specific marriage collection, then enter your search terms.
  6. View the Results: After entering the search criteria, click the "Search" button. A list of potential matches will appear.
  7. Examine the Records: Review each search result carefully. Look for details such as names, dates, locations, and names of parents or witnesses. If a record seems promising, click on the name to view the record details.
  8. Evaluate the Image: If an image of the marriage record is available, view the image to verify the information. The image may provide additional details not found in the index.
  9. Attach to Family Tree: If the record matches your ancestors, attach it to their profiles in your family tree. From the record details page, click the "Attach to Family Tree" button. Follow the prompts to connect the record to the correct individuals.

Tips for Searching:

  • Use Wildcards: If you are unsure of the spelling of a name, use wildcard characters such as * or ? to broaden your search.
  • Try Different Spellings: Names may have been recorded with different spellings. Try variations of the names you are searching for.
  • Check Nearby Locations: If you cannot find a marriage record in the expected location, search in neighboring towns or counties.
