How to Find Immigration Records for Ancestors
Finding Immigration Records
Immigration records can tell you when your ancestors arrived, where they came from, and who they traveled with.
Step 1: Search Records
Go to Search > Records and enter your ancestor's name.
Step 2: Filter by Category
On the left sidebar, click "Immigration & Travel" under Categories. You can also filter by:
- Specific collections (Ellis Island, Castle Garden, etc.)
- Date range of arrival
- Country of origin
Step 3: What You'll Find
Immigration records often include:
- Name and age at arrival
- Ship name and departure port
- Birthplace and last residence
- Final destination in America
- Names of relatives they were joining
Alternative Searches
- Try variations of the name - it may have been spelled phonetically
- Search for family members who may have traveled together
- Check naturalization records for additional clues
