Finding 1950 Census Records

The 1950 Census was released to the public in 2022 and is now fully indexed on FamilySearch. Here's how to find your ancestors:

Step 1: Go to Search

Click "Search" in the top menu bar of FamilySearch, then click "Records".

Step 2: Enter Search Details

Fill in what you know:

  • First Name and Last Name - Try variations and nicknames
  • Birth Year - Use a range (e.g., 1890-1910) if unsure
  • Residence - The state or county where they lived in 1950

Step 3: Filter by Collection

On the left sidebar, look for "Collections" and select "United States Census, 1950".

Step 4: Review Results

Click on a result to view the census image. You'll see:

  • Names of everyone in the household
  • Ages, birthplaces, and occupations
  • Address where they lived
  • Relationship to head of household

Tips for Success

  • Try searching by address if you know where they lived
  • Search for other family members - they may be listed together
