Getting Started
- Create a Free Account: Go to FamilySearch.org and click the "Free Account" button. Follow the prompts to register.
- Sign In: Return to FamilySearch.org and click "Sign In." Enter your username and password.
Navigating the Family Tree
- Access the Family Tree: Once logged in, click "Family Tree" in the top menu, then select "Tree."
- Start with Yourself: Enter your information to begin building your tree. Include your name, birth date, and place of birth.
- Add Parents: Click the "Add Father" or "Add Mother" button to enter information about your parents.
- Navigate Through Generations: Continue adding ancestors by clicking on the "+" icons on each person's profile to add their parents, spouses, and children.
Searching Records
- Access the Search Feature: Click "Search" in the top menu, then select "Records."
- Enter Search Criteria: Type in the name, birth date, location, or other details of an ancestor you are searching for.
- Review Search Results: Examine the records that appear. If you find a match, you can attach the record to the appropriate person in your family tree.
Exploring the FamilySearch Catalog
- Access the Catalog: Click "Search" in the top menu, then select "Catalog."
- Search by Place: Enter a location to find records specific to that area.
- Filter Results: Use the filters to narrow down the results by record type, date range, and other criteria.
Discovering Family History Activities
- Access Activities: Click "Activities" in the top menu.
- Choose an Activity: Select an activity to learn more about your ancestors and family history.
