Discover Your Roots: Getting Started with FamilySearch Family Tree

This guide will help you take your first steps in exploring your family history using FamilySearch's online family tree.

Step 1: Creating a Free FamilySearch Account

Before you can begin building your tree, you'll need a FamilySearch account. The best part? It's completely free!

  1. Go to the FamilySearch website: FamilySearch.org
  2. Click the green "Free Account" button located in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Fill out the required information: First Name, Last Name, Birthday, Gender, and Country.
  4. Carefully read and accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
  5. Click the "Create Account" button.
  6. Verify your email address by clicking the link sent to your inbox (if required).

Step 2: Accessing the Family Tree

Now that you have an account, let's dive into the Family Tree!

  1. Log in to your FamilySearch account at FamilySearch.org
  2. Click on the "Family Tree" tab in the top navigation menu.
  3. Select "Tree" from the dropdown menu. This will open the Family Tree view.

Step 3: Adding Yourself to the Tree

The first step to building your tree is adding yourself as the starting point.

  1. You'll likely see a prompt to add the first person to your tree. If not, click the "+" icon in the center of the tree view.
  2. Enter your first name, last name, gender, birthdate, and birthplace. Be as accurate as possible.
  3. Click "Next."
  4. FamilySearch will search for potential matches in its database. Review the matches carefully.
  5. If you find yourself listed in a match, click "Add Match." If not, click "Create Person."

Step 4: Adding Your Parents

Once you've added yourself, the next step is to add your parents.

  1. In the Family Tree view, click on your name.
  2. Click the "Person" button that appears in the popup. This will bring you to the details page for your record.
  3. In the "Parents and Siblings" section, click "Add Father" and "Add Mother."
  4. Enter as much information as you know about each parent: first name, last name, gender, birthdate, and birthplace.
  5. Click "Next."
  6. Again, review any potential matches that FamilySearch finds and either "Add Match" or "Create Person."

Step 5: Exploring the Tree

Congratulations! You've started your family tree. Now you can explore and add more ancestors!

  • Click on the names of individuals in your tree to view their details and add more information.
  • Use the navigation tools to move up and down the tree and explore different branches.
  • Pay attention to the hints (small icons) that FamilySearch provides. These hints often lead to records that can help you expand your tree.
  • Collaborate with other family members who might have information about your ancestors.

Have fun discovering your family history!
