  • Enter your username and password, or click "Create Account" if you don't have one (it's free!).

Step 2: Navigate to the Search Records Page

  • From the top menu, hover over "Search".
  • Click on "Records" from the dropdown to access the historical records search.

Step 3: Enter the Browning Surname

  • On the "Search Historical Records" page, find the "Last Name" field.
  • Type "Browning".
  • You can leave the "First Name" blank for a broad search, or enter a known first name.

Step 4: Add Specific Information (Recommended)

  • To refine results, add details:
  • In "Birthplace", type a known location (e.g., "Kentucky, United States").
  • In "Birth Year", enter a year or range (e.g., "1850" or "1840-1860").
  • Optionally add a "Spouse's Name" or "Parents' Names".
  • Click the blue "Search" button.

Step 5: Review Your Search Results

  • FamilySearch displays a list of matching records. Each result shows the person's name, event, date, and place.
  • Note the "Collection" column to see the record type (e.g., U.S. Census).
  • Scan the list for potential ancestors.

Step 6: Refine Your Search with Filters

  • Use the filters on the left-hand side of the results page.
  • "Collection": Select specific record types (e.g., "United States Census, 1880").
  • "Place": Narrow by country, state, or county.
  • "Year Range": Adjust date ranges.
  • Click a filter option, and the results list updates automatically.

Step 7: View a Specific Record

  • Click on an individual's name or the blue "View Record" button for a promising result.
  • This opens a detailed record page with indexed information. Look for an image icon to view the original document.
  • Carefully check all information to confirm it's your ancestor.

Step 8: Attach to Your Family Tree

  • If the record matches your ancestor, you can add it to your FamilySearch Family Tree.
  • On the detailed record page, find the "Attach to Family Tree" button (often on the right).
  • Follow the prompts to either match the person to an existing profile in your tree or add them as a new person.

Step 9: Explore the Family Tree Search

  • To check if your Browning ancestor is already in the collaborative FamilySearch Family Tree:
  • Go to the top "Search" menu and click "Family Tree".
  • Enter "Browning" as the Last Name and any other known details.
  • Click "Search" to find existing profiles, potentially saving you research time.
