Step 3: Searching Historical Records

  1. Click on the Search tab in the navigation bar.
  2. Select Records from the dropdown menu.

    • Last Name: Enter the last name of your ancestor.
    • Birth Year: Enter the approximate birth year of your ancestor. Use the "Range" option for flexibility.
    • Birth Place: Type "Canada" or a specific province (e.g., "Ontario").
    • You can also add information about their death, marriage, residence, and relatives.
  4. Click the Search button.

Step 4: Exploring Canadian Record Collections

  1. From the Search tab, select Records.
  2. Scroll down the page to the section labeled Browse by Collection.
  3. Click on Browse All Collections.
  4. In the search bar at the top of the page, type "Canada."
  5. This will display a list of record collections specifically related to Canada, such as census records, vital records (births, marriages, deaths), immigration records, and more.
  6. Click on a collection to learn more about it and begin searching within that specific dataset.
  7. Pay close attention to the details of each record collection. Some might be indexed (searchable by name) while others may require you to browse through images of original documents.

Step 5: Attaching Records to Your Family Tree

  1. When you find a record that matches your ancestor, carefully examine the information to confirm it's the correct person.
  2. On the record details page, you will see a section labeled "Possible Matches." FamilySearch will suggest individuals in your tree who might be related to the record.
  3. Click Attach to Family Tree.
  4. Review the information from the record and confirm that it aligns with what you know about the person in your tree.
  5. Add a reason statement explaining why you believe this record belongs to this person.
  6. Click Attach. This will link the record to your ancestor's profile.

By following these steps, you can effectively use FamilySearch.org to research your Canadian ancestry. Remember to be patient, persistent, and always verify the information you find with multiple sources.
